Discover The Steps to Stop Panic Attacks
When a person is overwhelmed due to a panic attack, it more than often feels as though nothing can be done to help stop or even relieve the symptoms. However even though a panic attack can be really awful, there are steps to stop a panic attack. If nothing else, you can ease the symptoms so they are tolerable. There are a variety of different things that can cause a panic attack. Sometimes they are caused by unresolved issues from the past, and other times it could have been caused by an overly stressful or traumatic experience that happened more recently. For other people still, it can be caused by a lack of coping skills to handle the stress of life. A person can function normally and experience less panic attacks, from day to day, once they find the reason they experience these attacks. Panic attacks can become severe and develop into an problem called agoraphobia, a fear of leaving the house, if not addressed properly.
Taking Precautions
One of the first steps to stop a panic attack is to identify the triggers that are causing your anxiety. The triggers could be anything from an animal, person, or a problem that needs to be corrected. Once you know the triggers, you can proceed to the next step in stopping panic attacks.
People who have help with panic attacks will normally experience more than one and can usually recognize the symptoms that show up following the beginning of an attack. This way, an individual will be able to help themselves by talking themselves through the attack, which will in turn keep them calmer during the attack. Upon a panic attack, using the self talk method, a person can add a comment to tell themselves they have gone through this before and survived, and can do it again. You should also be able to work on breathing deeply in order to try and calm the body with slow breaths that are made from the diaphragm.
There are many other preventative steps you can take when you feel a panic attack is starting or notice that you are already having a panic attack. Many of the people who suffer from panic attacks are hard on themselves for having them. They will blame themselves for the attacks and think there is something wrong with them.
For these people, they need to know panic attacks are out of their control and they should have a better outlook on themselves. They need to have realistic expectations for stopping panic attacks, and to reduce them by reducing the situations that cause them. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and caffeine should be eliminated or significantly reduced because they also can trigger panic attacks.
